K. Shepherd & Son is an experienced, family-run company of tree surgeons from Godalming. With services available in the surrounding Cranleigh, Farnham, Guildford, Haslemere and Woking areas, we have in-depth knowledge about the risks involved in tree surgery. We understand the importance of complying with health and safety regulations, and of keeping up to date with developments in arboriculture.
A safety-focused outlook is not only vital to tree surgeons performing their work; it also protects other personnel, the general public and, of course, the environment. We monitor standards and provide our tree surgeons with ongoing training and assessment, ensuring they understand, and follow, all current health and safety guidelines.
Anyone involved in tree surgery, whether it be in a domestic, commercial or industrial setting, has a personal responsibility for safety and must adhere to the latest safe working practices. In the UK, the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) sets out guidelines for tree surgeons. You can find best practices for tree surgery on the HSE website but, for a broader overview of the health and safety policies our tree surgeons work to, please see below.
If you have any questions about how we apply safety practices for tree surgery or hedge cutting in the Cranleigh, Farnham, Godalming, Guildford, Haslemere and Woking areas, please contact us on 01483 428 956 or 07860 698 655.
Operating in compliance with the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992, our tree surgeons always wear the appropriate personal protective equipment. This includes items such as helmets, gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing, boots and any specialist equipment needed for specific work, such as harnesses for aerial tree surgery.
Another important legislation we adhere to as tree surgeons is the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1992. This lays out the responsibilities for owning and operating work equipment, keeping it well maintained and ensuring only personnel with the right training use it. This equipment can include stump grinding machinery or mechanical hedge cutters.
It is a legal requirement for chainsaw operators to have training in the use of such powerful tools, especially when working at height. We ensure all our tree surgeons have this training and the wearing of protective clothing whilst using chainsaws is fundamental. This can include safety helmets, hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves, chainsaw boots and high-visibility clothing.
We never attend jobs here in Godalming, in the surrounding Cranleigh, Farnham, Guildford, Haslemere and Woking areas, or anywhere else in the region, without this equipment.
Whether removing a tree for a homeowner, trimming a tall hedge for a commercial client, pruning for a woodland trust or crown lifting trees for a local authority, our tree surgeons follow the Working at Height Regulations 2005. Compliancy includes appropriate planning for emergencies, assessing risks, and using safety equipment such as climbing harnesses and ladders.
All personnel of K. Shepherd & Son undergo regulatory training.
Following on from current Working at Height Regulations, tree surgeons must take further precautions to address potential hazards for aerial work. This includes performing risk assessments before climbing trees, such as unstable branches. Ground supervisors communicate with aerial workers continually whilst keeping a vigilant eye out for potentially dangerous situations.
We can undertake aerial work, such as sectional dismantling, in complete safety in Godalming and the surrounding Cranleigh, Farnham, Guildford, Haslemere and Woking areas.
